In July, a series of tests revealed less than encouraging results in my right hand. The doctor asked me to perform a list of movements ranging from merely moving my right thumb, to making a fist or touching my thumb to each digit on my hand. My hand lay lifeless, unable to respond and I was told there was nothing that could be done.

Two weeks later I returned to occupational therapy at Holy Family Memorial’s Rehab Plus to train my two functioning nerves, to begin to compensate for the damaged radial nerve. The initial assessment was again sobering and discouraging, as the loss of sensory and mobility was huge. However, with the help and knowledge of Toni Hacker and my determination, improvement was noted very quickly. Each task that I was able to perform gave me more strength and faith to plow ahead and gain the use of my right hand to every level possible. Range of motion was astounding in my elbow, wrist and thumb; areas greatly affected by the severed nerve.

I cannot praise Toni enough for her expertise, compassion and all-encompassing care that was the turning point in my recovery. To report to her that I was able to work with clasp on a necklace, curl my hair, attempt to feed myself with a spoon with my right hand, squeeze a cloth or rock my wrist back and forth, were the highlights of my therapy.

I recovered use of a limb after having been given no hope; thanks to Toni and Holy Family Memorial. Therapy, prayer, determination and healing power beyond the physical realm have been evidenced in my hand and I am eternally grateful.
