Question: What can I do to prevent death from cancer?

Answer: Death and taxes are certain, but we still would like to avoid them as much as we can. I don’t know much about taxes, but as far as death from cancer is concerned, the answer is very simple: look for it, find it early and get rid of it.

I recently became acquainted with a case of a 79-year-old woman who saw her doctor every year for a mammogram and a vaginal exam for early detection of breast and cervical cancer. Over the years, she adamantly refused to have a colonoscopy to look for colon cancer, because she did not like the preparation involved. Now she is dying from cancer, which has spread from her colon to her entire body.

In the field of my expertise, the urinary tract, we had tremendous success in reducing death from prostate cancer by screening and early detection. It is time to expand the screening to detect other cancers, such as in the bladder and in the kidneys.

One of the earliest signs of cancer in the bladder or the kidneys is a trace of blood in the urine. Edward Messing, MD, working in Madison, has shown that people who had their urine checked for traces of blood repeatedly had lower death rate from bladder cancer than those who declined to do so.

Holy Family Memorial offers a free prostate cancer screening and optional bladder cancer screening every September. Please watch for more information to be released.

In conclusion, for the urinary tract, we can help detect and treat cancer early by physical examination, urine and blood tests.
