Manitowoc Vision 2022 Summit

Happy 2018! Do any of you wish you could see into the future? I always seem to find myself beginning the New Year wishing I had a crystal ball to foresee what the year will bring. What will be the new happy moments? Sad moments? Life-changing moments?

But then, I realize how complacent that sounds. I do have a role in shaping my future. I do have a choice, after all. I can play it easy and just see what happens, or I can be the master architect of my life and design it to be the best it can be.

So it is with our community. As residents and lovers of Manitowoc County, we all have a choice in how we approach our collective future. The creation of Vision 2022 is intended to be about moving Manitowoc County forward by creating and leading a path together to a strong future.

Vision 2022 is a grassroots social movement led by businesses, civic leaders and organizations to create a five-year (2018-2022) plan to drive Manitowoc County toward unified planning, action and achievement, resulting in community growth, health and prosperity.

Vision 2022 is not intended to duplicate existing efforts, but hopes to focus the various groups working on projects to unite and determine major initiatives that will allow our county to see more growth and economic prosperity. This model was successfully used in 2011, and the Vision 2022 movement will utilize the successful approaches from that effort.

To begin the planning process, a community study was conducted by Leede Research. More than 2,500 residents participated in the study, which is believed to be the largest community study ever. Results indicate the features we love about living here, but more importantly what we believe should change. Those results will be used as key information toward identifying strategic initiatives to move our community forward.

Results of the community study will be shared this Wednesday at the Vision 2022 Community Summit, held from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Manitowoc. Business leaders, social service organizations, civic leaders and the general community is invited to attend.

In addition to the survey results, several groups will present current information about key strategic work being conducted. Those include Healthiest Manitowoc County, The Chamber of Manitowoc County, Young Professionals of Manitowoc County and Progress Lakeshore. The summit highlight will be featured keynote speaker David Beurle, CEO of Future iQ, a world-renowned expert in community and regional planning and revitalization.

If you would like to be an architect for our community, join me and attend the summit. Let’s not wait to see what happens — rather, let’s work together to create our exciting future.
