Thirty-five year old Melanie has always struggled with her weight. It’s been something she’s been “meaning to do” for years, and just couldn’t find the effort to do. She decided to take control of her weight after learning about Why Weight and joined the program last August. Since joining Why Weight, Melanie has lost nearly 50 pounds! 

Here's what she has to say about the Why Weight program:

Why did you decide to join Why Weight?
I happen to coordinate Career Experiences for our local high school students to learn more about jobs in healthcare. One of my presenters came to speak about her work as a dietitian, and in between presentations, she was telling me about this great new program, and how successful it had been. I asked her to tell me more about the program, and it sounded very straight-forward.  The next time I saw a flyer come out, I checked out the program – and then called to sign up!

Did you have a weight loss goal when you first started the program?
Yes – my goal for the program was 28 pounds. My dream goal was (and still is) 100 pounds!

How did Why Weight help with your weight loss success?
I felt that the program moved in steps – you learned the basics about the expectations of the program, moved on to eating better, then added the physical activity – which was also increased each week. I wasn’t overwhelmed by trying to change everything all at one time.  

What did you learn from Why Weight?
I learned great and easy ways to make eating healthier easy – a lot easier than I expected it to be. I learned a lot about setting attainable goals, and how to deal with setbacks, bad days, and more – without beating myself up.

How long did it take you to drop the pounds with Why Weight?
Not long – within 2 weeks I was already seeing weight loss. The primary bulk of my weight loss happened within the first 6 months of the program.

What was your biggest challenge?
Making time for everything! I have a very busy job, and many commitments in my personal life beyond that yet. I needed to set aside time to cook healthy meals for the week, to put together a healthy lunch for work, and make time for physical activity.

Who is a part of your social support system?
My family, co-workers and the participants from my Why Weight group all helped me along my weight loss journey. My family has been awesome! They supported my decision to lose weight and get healthier. The participants in the Why Weight group with me have been great as well – they bring ideas, suggestions, and are just generally supportive. My coworkers – they’ve been very supportive and understanding, and very flexible with healthy treats. The Why Weight facilitators that lead our session have also been very helpful with accountability, suggestions, and modifications if needed.

How do you feel today after losing the weight?
I feel great! I still have a long way to go, but daily life, my energy, my outlook, and even my sleep have improved!

What advice do you have for others who are interested in joining Why Weight or looking to lose weight?
Don’t be afraid to try something! This isn’t a fad, this is a change in your life. It looks big and scary, but the team leaders take you through the process step-by-step. They work really hard to find ways to help members with limitations and help them find alternatives. Even just doing a little, making a few improvements, can make a big difference in your life in the long run!
