Tough Decisions

Sometimes as a runner you have to listen to your body. Most of us want to ignore the clues our body is giving us and keep pushing through. When we actually listen, we realize we might see a reality we don’t like. Sometimes, that reality forces a tough decision. I was faced with the dilemma of facing reality and making a tough call a few weeks ago.

Finding clarity in running

As my mileage increases, I am spending more time on my feet and alone with my thoughts. For some people, this would be annoying. For me it’s a treat. This is my time to think, decompress, and where magic happens. I usually come back from a run with a clearer head than when I started. Finding the answer I have been searching for or struggling to find is often found on a long run.

Trial and Error

The time is really flying by and the marathon will be here before we know it. I am finding a rhythm in my training these days. I feel confident in my training plan and my abilities. This is the one place I have struggled with during past marathons. As I reflect back, I realize that much of marathon training has been about trial and error. Going through some tough runs to find what works. The marathon distance is tough and one that needs to be respected.

Resilience (and maybe a bit of stubbornness)

Weeks three and four are in the books for training and I am feeling stronger every day. What used to feel hard is becoming easier. This is great because I often measure myself based on numbers and pace. It goes beyond that though. Progress in running is also about those things that the GPS watch doesn’t measure. Training is about rolling with changes as I have found training rarely goes as planned.

Spring is in the air!

It’s that time of year again where runners are on the roads in greater numbers. You see people out there for various reasons: people deciding to start running for the first time, those falling in love with running again after a break and those finding themselves released from the confines of the gym. This time of year reminds me of why I love running.
