Improving quality and patient safety are top issues in every healthcare organization. Locally Holy Family Memorial, Manitowoc, has just been nationally recognized with a new award in addition to recently receiving two national patient safety awards. The new recognition is designation as a Stage 6 Hospital for Electronic Medical Records (EMR) by HIMSS Analytics. HFM is one of only 42 hospitals nationwide to receive designation from HIMSS Analytics as a Stage 6 Hospital for EMR. According to Mike Davis, HIMSS executive vice president, only 0.5% of hospitals achieve this level. “The hospitals we rank as Stage 6 have implemented advanced clinical applications that improve patient safety and care delivery outcomes. HFM is leading the way in healthcare IT adoption.”
The honor is the result of years of planning, says Ed Bauknecht, director of HFM's Management Information Systems. “This national recognition is the culmination of many years of hard work by several individuals; not only in MIS, but all of the HFM staff who have dedicated time and talent in the implementation process and are committed to the use of these electronic tools to enhance patient safety. HIMSS has confirmed just how far HFM has traveled down the road of EMR.
”Being designated a Stage 6 hospital means that HFM's medical records are almost fully automated and paperless. It is the second highest level of recognition possible, with Stage 7 hospitals having a completely paperless EMR environment. This recognition confirms the vision and hard work of the staff at Holy Family Memorial showing they recognize the importance of electronic records in creating patient convenience and safety. Additionally national studies are indicating that electronic records will cut health care costs. These savings occur through reduced staff overtime through the streamlining of the medical record process. HFM is now a recognized leader on the path to totally paperless medical records systems.
Steven Driggers, MD, HFM's Chief Medical Officer, also stresses that this designation is a key quality indicator that benefits all HFM customers. “Being a Stage 6 hospital reinforces HFM's commitment to quality care. It better positions us to have the capability to provide data on quality of care and to successfully address industry transformations in the future. For the patient and all customers, it means a continued focus on improving care delivery to ensure quality and value throughout our organization.”
“We congratulate everyone at Holy Family Memorial,” says Howard Messing, president and COO of MEDITECH, the vendor which supplies the core information system and clinical acute-care applications to HFM. “We've enjoyed a wonderful 20-year partnership with Holy Family Memorial, and it's rewarding to see them honored with Stage 6 recognition. The Stage 6 designation places them among the most advanced clinical IT users in the country.” HIMSS Analytics is a wholly-owned, not-for-profit subsidiary of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).
