Varicose Leg Screening August 23

The varicose vein leg screening at Holy Family Memorial now includes a screening ultrasound.

Varicose veins, which can be more than cosmetic, are caused by failing valves in the primary veins that allow blood to pool up in the legs. Symptoms can range from aching and fatigue to skin ulcers and blood clots. Dr. Milan Jordan of HFM General & Vascular Surgery can now treat varicose veins with the latest procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to seal a typical vein of about 14 inches in three to five minutes.

Determining if veins are more than cosmetic can be done through taking a patient’s history and looking at the veins but a complete screening which assures a more valid result includes a screening ultrasound which allows a doctor to determine if the valves in the major superficial vein in the leg are working correctly. More tests are not recommended until the screening shows the valves are not working correctly so money is saved by preventing unnecessary follow-up tests. The screening ultrasound is simple, non-invasive and only takes a few minutes.

The next varicose vein screening at Holy Family Memorial is August 23 from 4 to 7 p.m. Appointments may be made by calling Central Scheduling at 320.6777. The $10.00 fee includes the screening ultrasound and a brief exam of the legs by Dr Jordan.
