Sunday, August 31, 2014 - Reed Ave Facility Update

I would like to update you on Holy Family Memorial’s campus located at 333 Reed Ave. in Manitowoc. The building located there was built as Memorial Hospital 62 years ago and operated as a general hospital until 1991, when it merged with Holy Family Medical Center. This blending of entities led to the historical creation of today’s Holy Family Memorial. In the past 23 years it housed a variety of outpatient, support and administrative services.

Over the last several years, HFM has conducted master space planning, which resulted in the decision to purposefully have fewer campus buildings and instead focus on key sites with a collection of customer-friendly services with easy access and convenience for you, our valued customers.

This planning led to the consolidation of services and the sale of several buildings, including the Medical Arts and Buffalo Street campuses, as well as the construction of our Harbor Town campus and the expansion of the Medical Center on Western Avenue.

Regarding the Reed Avenue campus, building experts have indicated that the structure, while grand in its day, no longer meets current building codes and would require significant investment in order to bring it up to code to remodel the building for other uses.

As we have relocated services out of the Reed Avenue Campus, we have also approached others about buying the building. However, due to the great expense required to remodel it, sale of the building has proven infeasible. However, HFM is committed to repurposing the beautiful land it rests on for meaningful community use. In order to achieve this outcome, the current building must be disassembled so the land can be sold, revitalized and bring new value and charm to our community. Consequently, HFM has made the decision to take down the building.

Acting as good stewards, we have worked with several local nonprofit organizations that have been the recipients of any useful items that remained in the building. Shrubs, flowers and decorative rocks have been removed and placed within the HFM Heritage Garden at Western Avenue, beautifully commemorating the history of the site and blending the old with the new.

HFM employees, some of whom worked at Memorial Hospital, have taken other plants and shrubs to blossom in their private yards. Lastly, we have assured preservation of all historic artifacts that existed, both inside and outside the building, so the legacy of the HFM Reed Avenue campus will live on throughout our community.

Site preparation activities will begin shortly, followed by demolition of the building. This project does not impact the HFM Behavioral Health Clinic located on a separate property directly next door to the Reed Avenue campus.

If anyone wishes to obtain a memento brick from the Reed Avenue campus, please contact me at (920) 320-3482 or

Mary Maurer is vice president of business development at Holy Family Memorial.
