Holy Family Memorial family medicine physician Xa Xiong, MD, has been named the 2016 Family Physician of the Year by the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians (WAFP). Each year, WAFP honors an outstanding Wisconsin family physician who provides patients with compassionate, comprehensive care, and serves as a role model in his or her community and to other healthcare professionals.
Dr. Xiong’s decision to become a family medicine physician was inspired by his own early life experiences. A Hmong immigrant from Laos, Dr. Xiong spent the majority of his childhood in Thai refugee camps where medicine was not a priority. While in theses refugee camps he witnessed families losing loved ones regularly, including the loss of his own brother.
"From these experiences, I knew I wanted to become a doctor who could treat a person and their families as a whole—from the mind to the physical body and the soul," said Dr. Xiong. “Today, it is a truly humbling and a tremendous privilege to be recognized by the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians.”
In addition to his day-to-day challenges of a busy family practice, Dr. Xiong devotes his free time to a variety of community service and volunteer activities. He is the founder of the Dr. Xa Xiong Foundation: A Quest for Education which provides tools and knowledge to help students, parents and organizations pursue higher education. The foundation's goal is to inspire individuals to achieve the highest visions in the context of individual health, leadership, income, family and education—iLIFE. Dr. Xiong is passionate about helping Hmong communities by bridging cultural barriers within the healthcare system, helping ensure people get the healthcare they need.
“All of us at Holy Family Memorial congratulate and applaud Dr. Xiong on this well-deserved honor as the 2016 Family Physician of the Year,” said HFM Chief Medical Officer Dean Pollnow, MD. “This award speaks to the high-quality, compassionate care that Dr. Xiong and his care team— nurse practitioner Rhonda Zimmermann, physician assistants Brandon Beck and Naly Yang, and the nurses and medical assistants who work in HFM Family Medicine, provide to patients.”
“Dr. Xiong’s delivery of patient care is a true reflection of Holy Family’s “Right Care” philosophy in which we aim to provide patients with the right care, in the right setting, to get the right outcome,” added Dr. Pollnow. “He is known by his patients as being caring and respectful, and takes time to get to know them so that he can address their concerns and help them achieve the best health outcome.”
Dr. Xiong earned his medical degree from Spartan Health Sciences University in Vieux Fort, St. Lucia. He completed an internship and medical residency with Fox Valley Family Practice in Appleton, Wisconsin. Dr. Xiong also serves on the HFM board of directors and is a member of the WAFP and Wisconsin Medical Society.
Dr. Xiong is currently not accepting new patients though appointments can be made with one of the physician assistants or nurse practitioner on his care team, Rhonda Zimmermann, APNP, NP-C, Brandon Beck, PA-C, or Naly Yang, PA-C, by calling HFM Family Medicine at (920) 320-4500.
