Traditionally, lung disease has commonly been associated with work environments in the automotive production, mining, and nuclear industries, but machinists, farmers, bird fanciers, flock workers, carpenters, construction workers, textile workers, and gun hobbyists who make their own ammunitions may all be exposed to atmospheres where lung diseases can be contracted and/or exacerbated.

A chest x ray and lung function studies are initial diagnostic evaluations in most cases.

- the amount of air breathed in and out
- the speed it moves
- the effectiveness of oxygen exchange with the blood
