Lung cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer in the United States. In fact, in Manitowoc County, lung cancer strikes approximately 60 people every year based on information from the National Cancer Institute state cancer profiles. It’s also the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women.
HFM offers a self-referred, low-dose CT screening for those at high-risk of developing lung cancer. Eligible patients need to:
- Be age 50 or older
- Have a 20 or more pack-years of cigarette smoking
- 2 packs per day for 10 years
- 1 pack per day for 20 years
- ½ pack per day for 40 years
Former smokers who meet the criteria and have quit within the past 15 years are also eligible. If you are not eligible, but still concerned, speak with your primary care provider.
The screening costs $50 and is typically not covered by insurance.
