FREE Prostate Cancer Screening
Holy Family Memorial is offering a free prostate screening on Wednesday, September 19, from 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. at Holy Family Memorial’s Cancer Center, 2300 Western Avenue in Manitowoc. Giora Katz, M.D., of HFM Urology, and Richard K. Milewicz, RPA-C of HFM’s Cancer Center, will conduct the digital rectal exams.
New screening guidelines recommend a digital rectal exam only; the PSA blood test is no longer recommended for screening. However, PSA blood testing will be available for a $10.00 fee for those who would still like to have it done. It is recommended that men over age 40 who have not had a prostate exam or screening in the past 12 months participate in a digital rectal exam.
Men who would like to make an appointment for the screening should call Insights, HFM’s Health Resource Center, at 320-2519 between 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday – Friday, beginning Tuesday, September 4, 2012.
Please note that participants should allow one-half hour for the screening. Priority will be given to men over the age of 40 who have not had a prostate exam or screening in the past 12 months.
During the rectal exam, the doctor feels for a hard lump or growth that may be a tumor in the prostate. The prostate gland is about the size of a walnut and is located below the bladder and above the rectum. Its main function is to provide liquid for semen, the thick, milky fluid that carries sperm from the testicles.
