Dr. Campbell Recognized as Superhero of Medicine

Michael Wellner, Director of the HFM Heart and Vascular Center, was on the team who nominated Dr. Campbell and wrote the following in the nomination:

“Dr. Campbell is diligent, kind, compassionate and caring. Not only is he a skilled and masterful surgeon having saved many lives during complex and life threatening situations, he also very committed to doing what is right for the patient. That includes listening to patients even when they prefer not to have surgery and wish instead to choose hospice.

It also means working side by side with staff to carry out the best care possible all the way through the charting and documentation process. He is well known in the community for his humility, dedication to church and others along with his joyful personality and creative sense of humor.”

Dr. Matthew Campbell of HFM General and Vascular Surgery was recently honored by The Wisconsin Medical Society Foundation for being chosen as one of nine “Superheroes of Medicine.”

Those honored were chosen from nominations received from patients and colleagues. Each recipient was chosen for his or her unique superhero traits and was presented with a personalized award certificate at a dinner event in Madison, Wisconsin.

Dr. Campbell was selected as an Empowering Superhero, after being nominated by members of the HFM leadership team for his extraordinary surgical skills, his kindness and compassion, his joyful personality and his commitment to service as evidenced by using his vacation time for medical mission work.

HFM Chief Medical Officer Steve Driggers, MD told us, “Dr. Campbell truly is an outstanding example of what it means to be an extraordinary physician. Everyone who knows Dr. Campbell will tell you something noteworthy about him; it may be a patient whose life he saved, an employee who knows how deeply he respects those he works with or patients and colleagues who appreciate his surgical skills and dedication to providing exemplary patient care. The residents of Manitowoc County are very fortunate to have a surgeon with Dr. Campbell’s skills and passion about the surgical care he provides to patients here in Manitowoc and during his mission work in Bolivia.”

Dr. Campbell has been with HFM General and Vascular Surgery since 2008. He received his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health and specializes in general and thoracic surgical procedures. Twice a year Dr. Campbell takes vacation time and recruits other healthcare professionals to join him in traveling to South America to volunteer doing mission work. He lives in Manitowoc with his wife and children.
