What does "fellowship-trained" mean?

Orthopaedic surgeons are physicians who are specialists in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. However, over the past decade there have been dramatic advances in technology and surgical techniques, which has made it impossible for a surgeon to remain proficient in all aspect of orthopaedics.

This has led to the development of “specialties” within orthopaedic surgery, including hand, foot & ankle, joint replacement, spine, shoulder, and sports medicine. A physician becomes a specialist through “fellowship training,” which is an additional year of in-depth surgical training focused in a single specialty area. The benefit of specialization is simple - better patient outcomes. Numerous studies have shown that specialists who perform high volumes of a specific procedure have the best results.

At Lakeshore Orthopaedics, all of our surgeons are fellowship-trained specialists. This is what differentiates us from the other groups in Manitowoc and Sheboygan. As the most specialized orthopaedic group in Northeast Wisconsin, you can trust that our physicians are among the most qualified, knowledgeable, and skilled in their specific area of practice.
