Other Information
A physician assistant (PA) is a highly trained healthcare professional who is licensed and credentialed to practice medicine within the scope of practice of a supervising physician. Within the physician/PA relationship, a physician assistant exercises autonomy in medical decision making and provides a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic treatment options. The duties of a PA include performing physical exams, diagnosing and treating illnesses, ordering and interpreting lab tests, assisting in surgery, writing prescriptions, and providing patient education and counseling. Physician assistants are trained in the same medical model as physicians. They undergo training in a condensed time frame and then can further enhance their training in a residency program, or with their physician supervisors. A physician assistant is required to pass a national medical certification board and recertify every six years with an additional 100 hours of continuing medical education every two years. A PA must be licensed by the State of Wisconsin Board of Medical Examiners and nationally certified to practice at Lakeshore Orthopaedics. Mike DePew is a Certified Physician Assistant specializing in orthopaedic sports medicine. He assists Dr. Ryan Dopirak in the evaluation and treatment of orthopaedic patients with knee and shoulder injuries. He also helps to provide care for athletes of all ages.
