Back pain is extremely common, affecting up to 80% of all individuals at some point in their lives. The causes of back pain are numerous and diverse. Back pain is often due to something minor, such as a simple muscle strain. However, it can also be due to something far more serious, such as spinal stenosis with compression of the spinal cord. Because the spine is so complex, back or neck pain that fails to improve with conservative measures should be evaluated by a physician who specializes in the care of spinal disorders.
The Spine Clinic at Lakeshore Orthopaedics is team of medical professionals who specialize in the comprehensive care of spinal disorders, including low back pain, neck pain, and spinal pain that radiates into the arms and legs. Our team is led by Dr. Jeffrey Jacoby, an orthopaedic spine surgeon, and Dr. Ronald Manning, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician. At The Spine Clinic, our physicians work together to develop an individualized plan of care for each patient.
For the majority of patients with back or neck pain, the initial treatment is typically nonoperative. This usually consists of some combination of anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, and/or chiropractic care. Individuals who fail to respond to these initial measures may be candidates for spinal injections. Epidural steroid injections have been shown to be effective in providing pain relief in patients with back pain, sciatica, and spinal stenosis.
When patients fail to improve with conservative measures, surgery is sometimes considered. Dr. Jeffrey Jacoby is the first and only fellowship-trained orthopaedic spine surgeon in the history of Manitowoc County. He is proficient in all of the most current techniques in back and neck surgery, including:
- Minimally invasive microdiscectomy
- Minimally invasive X-STOP procedures for spinal stenosis
- Minimally invasive X-LIF procedures and AxiaLIF procedures for lumbar disorders
- Minimally invasive kyphoplasty for spine compression fractures
- Anterior and posterior approach lumbar fusions
- Anterior approach cervical fusions
