Have you ever heard someone from Manitowoc County say “It’s got to be better because it’s happening in Appleton…or Milwaukee…or Madison.” I’m sure you have. We all have. That’s because it’s human nature to undervalue the community in which a person lives and automatically assume that life and all that goes with it is better someplace else.
What we need to remind ourselves is that we can be that someplace else and in fact are that someplace else in many ways. Manitowoc County is rich in natural resources and talent. Just look around and appreciate the goodness we have.
- Our beautiful lakeshore is the envy of many visitors when they come and walk, bike or run along Mariners trail. They marvel at the freedom we have to enjoy God’s glory close up, for miles and miles.
- Local companies and people are featured regularly in magazines and national publications. We can all be proud of the accomplishments of our local leaders and organizations that demonstrate business excellence and innovative entrepreneurism. From service agencies to collection agencies to restaurants, colleges and manufacturers, we are doing things to put Manitowoc County on the map.
- Take for instance our health care system. We have the best of the best right here. We are somebody else’s someplace else. For instance, did you know that over 40% of the patients cared for at the HFM Heart and Vascular Center come from Sheboygan? HFM offers the only 24/7 cardiac cath lab in Manitowoc and Sheboygan counties. In fact we believe, no other community in Wisconsin with a population under 40,000 has a 24/7 cardiac cath lab. We are proud to share that our cardiac program has been recognized by the nations’ leading heart experts for providing top-quality cardiac care.
- Not only that, but few community hospitals can lay claim to being named a top Community Hospital by the likes of Becker’s Hospital Review, iVantage Health Analytics and The Chartis Center for Rural Health and other national organizations. In addition to knowing that our local outcomes for improved health are noted by others, we have the peace of mind knowing great health care is just blocks from our home.
Keeping these stellar accomplishments in mind when selecting health care is important, but it’s equally as important to select providers who put our community as #1. Our mission at HFM is to help people do more, feel better, live longer, and ensure people have superb healthcare they need, where and when they need it. We only grow and prosper by supporting organizations that support Manitowoc for the long haul. There will always be new players who come to town for the short term to effectively steer business out of town – to someplace else – and don’t have the best interests of our community in mind.
Let’s all go local and stay local. If we support the people and businesses who’ve demonstrated a commitment to making our community stronger, we all gain in the end. Manitowoc County: let’s stick together; be proud of what we’ve got and work together to make it even better.
