Books Donated to HFM Pediatrics
Thanks to an initiative by Lauren Baur, AmeriCorps member serving at Runaway and Youth Services (RAYS) of Lutheran Social Services, over 1,000 youth books have been collected and donated to HFM Pediatrics clinic for their Reach Out and Read program.
This program (http://www.reachoutandread.org/about-us/ "promotes early literacy and school readiness in pediatric exam rooms nationwide by giving new books to children and advice to parents about the importance of reading aloud. It builds on the unique relationship between parents and medical providers to develop critical early reading skills in children." An age-appropriate book is given to each child at Well Child Exams from 6 months up to 13 years of age at HFM Pediatrics.
The books were collected by Lauren Baur from ten different local organizations: employees of Friar Tuck's, Holy Family Memorial and Americollect; students from Monroe School, Washington Junior High School, Lincoln High School, UW Manitowoc and Silver Lake College; members of Lincoln High Honor Society and First Presbyterian Church, plus several anonymous donors.
