Knee pain is very common, and it is important to determine what is causing the pain to treat it effectively. Holy Family Memorial’s orthopaedic clinic offers the new, noninvasive Knee Kinesiography (commonly called Knee KG) technology to help find the source of knee pain. We are the only health care provider in Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Brown, Fond du Lac, Calumet, Kewaunee, Door and Outagamie counties to provide this unique offering.

How Does a KneeKG Work?

A KneeKG exam is completed in the rehabilitation clinic by physical therapy staff in collaboration with your orthopedist. Similar to how an electrocardiogram (EKG) measures the electric signals in the heart, a KneeKG evaluates the knees’ motion while you walk on a treadmill. This provides critical, patient-specific information, which helps your clinician better understand what may be contributing to your knee pain or functional deficit.

To prepare for your KneeKG, please wear or bring a pair of tennis shoes, socks and shorts. If you wear orthotics, you may bring them. On the day of the exam, do not apply any lotion or cream on your knee, thigh or legs. The KneeKG will take less than 45 minutes.

During the exam, your leg is placed in a knee brace called an “exoskeleton.” As you walk on the treadmill, your clinician will be able to view a dynamic, 3D assessment of your knee and receive a detailed report of your knee range of motion, which includes:

  • Flexion (bending)
  • Extension (straightening)
  • Adduction (movement towards middle of the body)
  • Abduction (movement away from the middle of the body)
  • Rotations (inward and outward)

This provides your clinician with detailed information to assist in treating the cause of your knee pain and help you improve the function of your knee. With this information, your clinician can develop a personalized treatment plan for optimal recovery.

Who Can Benefit From a KneeKG?
