Regenerative medicine uses your body’s own natural healing ability to treat injury and degenerative disease. Your own blood or stem cells can be used for healing. Treatment with regenerative medicine can lead to healing of injury or significant improvement in pain associated with degenerative diseases such as arthritis.

Hours: Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Treatments offered by Dr. Aleem Bakhtiar at Orthopaedics:

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP)
PRP is a solution containing platelets that are collected from your own blood. Platelets contain growth factors and stem cell recruiting factors. When they are injected into an injured area, they initiate the body’s healing process. PRP is used not only in soft tissue injuries of muscles, tendons, and ligaments but it can be used in joints to treat arthritis as well.

Alpha-2-Macroglobulin (A2M)
A2M is a blood protein that can inhibit the progression of arthritis by protecting cartilage from breakdown and inflammatory changes. This protein can be isolated from your blood using a filtration system. It is often injected along with PRP to support cartilage restoration. An A2M injection also leads to rapid pain relief.

Stem-cell injection
Stem cells can differentiate into multiple different tissues. These cells can be harvested from your fat cells, concentrated in a centrifuge, and then injected back into the injured tissue to trigger a healing response. Stem cell injections are used most commonly for painful arthritis.

Most of these therapies are still new, and are not often covered by commercial insurance.
