Cancer is a life-changing diagnosis that can leave people stunned and searching for answers. At the HFM Cancer Center, patients can turn to our nurse navigator.
Our nationally recognized cancer program is ready to treat patients with a complete team of doctors who bring their expertise together every day.
The Commission on Cancer (CoC), a quality program of the American College of Surgeons, has accredited the HFM Cancer Center since 1998. In 2017 our program received a rating of 3 year approval with Commendation as a Community Hospital Cancer Program.
The CoC encompasses the best minds in cancer care utilizing expertise from the entire oncology community to set the highest standards of care for CoC-accredited cancer programs.
CoC accreditation challenges cancer programs to enhance the care they provide by addressing patient-centered needs and measuring the quality of the care they deliver against national standards. It provides value through improved patient outcomes across all domains of care: access and service, satisfaction and well-being, quality of care and cancer outcomes.
The staff of the HFM Cancer Center is passionate about providing this high-level of service to its patients and is pleased to have received this accreditation.
Reaching out to the community
In 2017 the HFM Cancer Center partnered with the HFM Wellness Center in its community cancer prevention efforts. About 250 children in two local elementary schools learned that poor nutrition and excess weight can increase the risk of developing cancer. Current recommendations on healthy eating and activity patterns were shared in age-appropriate class room presentations led by HFM Cancer Center staff, followed by an activity session with members of the HFM Wellness Center staff. The school teachers received educational posters and exercise game ideas to continue the healthy lifestyle message in the future. Students in grades 3-8 were asked to fill out an activity/screen-time log as well as a survey over the following week. About 50% of those were completed and returned. Approximately 75% of the answers indicated that the class room presentation and use of the logs helped the students reduce screen time, increase activity, and make healthier food choices. Many teachers expressed appreciation for this health and lifestyle education and are planning to use the provided materials in their future lessons.
