Froedtert Holy Family Memorial Hospital has been using radiation therapy to treat cancer patients in the Manitowoc area since the mid-1960s. As each new treatment has come along, we’ve made it available to our patients.
How TomoTherapy Works
TomoTherapy is a cancer treatment that attacks tumors with highly precise radiation delivered from 360 degrees around you—which increases the control doctors have in getting radiation where it needs to be and helps to decrease the damage to surrounding healthy tissue and organs.
The TomoTherapy system is designed on a CT scanner foundation so each time you come in for treatment the CT imaging guides the treatment for your anatomy that day rather than the way it looked last week—even the smallest changes are noticed. It can be adapted at any point to best deliver treatment, delivering the right dosage, in the right places, at the right time.
Advantages of TomoTherapy Treatment
Treatment is noninvasive and painless; similar to having a CT scan or an x-ray. This innovative therapy can result in fewer and less severe side effects. Many patients feel better than they expected they would; and because it minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissue you have a lower risk of pain and complications.
No two cancers are alike but conventional radiation therapies often treat them in the same way. This system lets our radiation oncology team design a personalized treatment plan and adjust it at any time during treatment. Additionally, it can be used in combination with surgery, chemotherapy and other medications to attack cancer cells in many ways at once.
A Revolutionary Approach to Cancer Treatment
TomoTherapy is a revolutionary system and the only one of its kind in Manitowoc, Brown, Sheboygan and Calumet counties, demonstrating that the Cancer Center is dedicated to bringing area residents some of the best cancer treatments available.
